Proposition 65 Statement for Customer Service

Script customer service reps should use when asked about Proposition 65:

“Proposition 65 is a law that requires warnings on products sold in California if they contain certain chemicals. Now, warnings must also be shown to California residents prior to purchase. As our customer, you’ll be informed when you’re shopping if a product that we sell carries the warning. We’re committed to your safety, and we believe all of our products are completely safe when used as directed.”

Longer version (for context)

Proposition 65 is a California law originally passed by voter initiative in 1986. It requires warnings on products sold in California if they contain certain chemicals. Historically, the warnings were only required to be on a product or a product’s packaging when the product was sold in the state of California. Effective August 30, 2018, warnings must also be shown to California residents prior to purchase.

This means warnings must now appear in a company’s catalogs, websites, and other similar advertising. Our company will be marking any product with a Prop 65 warning at the point of sale. Regardless of the warnings, these are the same safe products Carolina has offered for over 90 years.

There are currently over 850 chemicals on the Proposition 65 list. It contains a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals that are shown to cause cancer, birth defects, or both.

Examples of products requiring the warnings are:

  • Unfinished wood products because they may contain wood dust
  • Sand because it may contain silica
  • Candles and lighters because they may generate carbon monoxide as they burn
  • Electrical cords because cord coverings may contain phthalates.

Carolina is 100% committed to product and customer safety, and we believe all of our products are completely safe when used as directed.
