How to set up Carolina Science Online as a new tool provider in Canvas?

Before implementing Gateway LTI Links, Carolina Science Online (CSO) should be added to your LMS environment as a LTI Tool Provider/External Learning Tool Provider. This one-time step requires administrator access. Once the tool provider has been set up, course instructors can add LTI links to their courses without needing special admin permissions.

Canvas refers to the LTI Tool Provider as an "External App."

  • Click on the "Admin" icon on your dashboard and select your organizational account.
  • Click on "Settings" at the bottom of the left-hand navigation menu, then the "Apps" tab. Then, click the "View App Configurations" button.
  • Click on "Add App" or "+App".
  • Fill in the following fields:
    • Name: Use a name that works for your organization. We suggest “Carolina Online Gateway” or “Carolina Science Online”.
    • Consumer Key: This code will have already been provided to you or the instructor directly from Carolina Distance Learning.
    • Shared Secret: This code will have already been provided to you or the instructor directly from Carolina Distance Learning.
    • Domain: https://carolinascienceonline.com
    • Privacy: Use your organization’s preference for privacy settings.
    • Launch URL: Leave blank.
  • Once these fields are filled, hit “Submit”.

Carolina Science Online is now added as a tool provider/app in your LMS. Course instructors can now add LTI links to their courses without needing special admin permissions.
