How do I grade Gateway lab notebooks?

How you grade the lab notebooks provided in each Gateway lab manual depends on the manner in which you and your students are accessing your Gateway product.

Gateway via LTI integration:

If you are using an LTI link to provide each lab manual to your students, students should be instructed to download their lab notebooks from the lab manual upon completion of the activities. Create an assignment where students can then upload their lab notebook file to you for grading.

To download their lab notebook, the student will:

  • Open the Lab Notebook tool in the lab manual.
  • Use the arrow buttons in the notebook window to navigate to the last page of the notebook. This last page has a Notes field and a Print button at the bottom of the page.
  • Click “Print”.
  • Print the notebook to a PDF. The file name should be changed to something descriptive or using directions given by their instructor. The location in which the file is saved should be noted.

Then, direct students to upload the PDF to the assignment you created in your LMS.

Gateway via SSO:

If you are using an SSO connection to the Carolina Science Online (CSO) platform to provide each lab manual to your students, students can submit their lab manual one of two ways – by downloading their lab notebook or submitting their assignment in CSO.

Option 1 - Downloading the Lab Notebook:

When you ask students to download their lab notebook, you can leverage the use of your LMS’s grading features or rubrics to grade your students’ work in the same way you grade all their other work. See the steps in the Gateway via LTI integration section of this article for how students can download their lab notebooks.

Option 2 – Submitting Assignment in CSO:

When you ask students to submit their assignment in CSO, they do not need to download any files or submit lab work in the LMS. You will be able to use the teacher dashboard in CSO to view the lab notebooks as the students have saved them.

To view a completed lab notebook in CSO:

  • Log in to your Teacher account at carolinascienceonline.com
  • Go to “Assignments” from the left side menu.
  • Open the assignment you wish to grade.
  • Scroll down to the list of students who have been assigned the assignment. For each student, you will see details such as their name, time spent, cumulative score, and individual resource scores.
  • If you have assigned more than one resource for the assignment, hover over the columns “R1”, “R2”, etc. to identify which resource is the lab manual.
  • For each student, click their score in the resource column. This score should appear as “n.a.”. Clicking the score opens the resource as the student left it when the assignment was submitted.
  • Open the Lab Notebook tool in the lab manual.
  • Use the arrow buttons in the notebook window to navigate to the first page of the notebook and start grading. You will be able to see all the data, text, and images as the student entered them.
  • When you are finished evaluating the student’s work, you can enter their notebook score in the CSO gradebook, which can then be exported to your LMS gradebook.

If students’ time spent values or pre-Lab assessment scores are not showing up, direct students to make sure that they go to the last page of the lab manual which says “Completion” (go to the Disposal and Clean-up section then navigate to the next page) and/or to submit their assignment from the student dashboard if they have not already done so.

Note that if a student does not pass the pre-lab assessment and attempts to submit the assignment in CSO, the assignment will still show as not submitted in the teacher dashboard.
